Born about 1480, England: d 1551 at Stamford. His will dated February 20, 1551 and proved October 19, 1551 requests that he be buried at All Hallows Parrish, Stamford. Maurice served Constable of Stamford (1507-9), Chamberlain (1508-9), member of the Second Twelve (1508-12), member of the First Twelve (1512-51), mayor (1517-18), (1538-9) and a member of Parliment from Stamford(1523,1529,1536). He had interests in both mercantile and maritime trades, lived in All Hallows Parish, Stamford where he was assessed for subsidy in 1546. Maurice was Catholic and had a sister who married Robert Smith of Standground Co. Hunts. His will gives the middle name of Morrice to his three sons.

Notes for ROBERT MAURICE JOHNSON:
Robert was a minister. He was an Archdeacon in the Church of England and was a chaplain to Sir Nicholas Bacon. He was the vicar of North Luffenham for 50 years. Robert Johnson immigrant ancestor and founder of New Haven came from a distinguished family of Leicestershire, England. The best know of which was Rev. Robert Johnson, son of Maurice Johnson, alderman of Stanford, Lincolnshire. Robert Johnson was a graduate and fellow of Jesus College, Oxford, canon of Windsor in 1572 and archdeacon of Leicester in 1591. He founded two schools and two hospitals in Rutlandshire all of which he endowed. He was also benefactor of the preachers of St. Paul's Cross, Upping. His school at Uppingham still remains in charge of the Johnson family. It reached distinction in late years. The Johnson family still maintains two scholarships established by the archdeacon Abraham Johnson son of the archdeacon, lived at Clipsham, Rutlandshire and he had two sons who came to America. Isaac and Robert. Isaac Johnson, the elder son married Lady Arabella, daughter of the Earl of Lincoln.

The home (called Barne End) which was residence of the Johnson family from 1590 to 1648 was originally built about 1460 had a major addition in 1770 and still stands.

Came to America with the Winthrop Fleet at Salem, MA, June 22, 1630. Applied for Freeman's status in Mass Bay Colony at meeting in 19 Oct 1630 - and was elected a representative for his town of "Rocksbury". Took Freeman's oath in 28 May 1631, the first group to take such an oath. This info according to Winthrop Society.Org. web site. He came to MA with the Winthrop Fleet in 1630 bringing with him six of his ten children. His wife Mary died in England before he emigrated. He was appointed surveyor-general of arms and ammunition in MA in 1641 - essentially a quartermaster for the militia and served in this function for 20 years receiving a grant of 300 acres for this service.

He was Captain of the Roxbury Company in the Narragansett Expedition and was killed at the head of his company in the famous Fort Naragansett fight on December 19, 1675 near Four Corners, Sakonnet River, Rhode Island

I, Isaac Johnson, Sen., of Middletown, doe make this my last will and testament: I give to my Mary 1-2 of my household stuff, all my stock and tools, and 15 acres of land which came by her brother Thomas, to be hers forever. I give to my son Isaac Johnson, besides what I have already given him, 120 acres of land lying out towards the Great Swamp. I give unto my son Nathaniel's heirs 55 acres of land in Haddam bounds, sd. land to be divided between the two sons. Nathaniel to have a double part and Jonathan a single share. And my will is that Nathaniel, my son's eldest son, should have a double portion of the estate I give to that family. Item. To my sons Daniel and Joseph, and Nathaniel's heirs, I give all my lands on the east side of the Great River. I give to my daughter Mary the west end of my lott towards the Great Swamp, all the remainder which I have not already disposed of, also 1-4 part of my household stuff. And I do appoint my three sons, Isaac, Daniel and Joseph to be executors.

Asa moved to Canaa, Ct. with his parents when he was about 12 years old. He married his cousin Thankful Cowles. Between 1760 and 1770 Asa moved with his family to Williamstown, Mass. He owned several lots along both sides of the main street laid out for williamstown. It is not known for sure when he moved, but by October 1770 he was living in Rutland, Vt. where his daughter Chloe was born. She is said to have been the third white child to be born in Rutland. Asa served in the Revolutionary War from Rutland, list of the pay roll of Captain Nathaniel Blanchard's Company of Militia which lists Asa Johnson and his son Benjamin Johnson.

Phineas appears to have lived at one time at Paris, Oneida Co., NY where he purchased land Feb. 26th or 28th, 1797, being than called Paris. He later was member of a Military Co., there. Evidently he returned to Ct. as at a sale of this land Jan.13, 1804 he was living in Berlin. He continued to reside there until 1819 when he went to Carlisle, Ohio where some of his relatives had already removed. He reached there Nov. 5, 1819. He was Justice of the Peace and kept an Inn. In 1830 he opened a hotel at La Porte. About 1833 he and his son William H. removed to Kishawaukee, Winnebago Co., Ill. His grave was leveled and secreted to prevent Indians from finding it.

Notes for DAVID JOHNSON:
David moved with his parents to Ontario Co., NY from Rutland, VT at a young age. He came to Ohio in 1811 to live with his brother Levi and lived on what is now called the Old Jones Farm near McArthur. David was one of the first settlers of Swan Township. He enlisted in the War of 1812 and obtained a commission to recruit a brigade of teams and pack horses under General Harrison. At the close of the war he returned to his home and married Elizabeth Will. They moved to Swan Township then to Hocking Co., Ohio. He opened the first wagon road that was made in Swan Township, introduced the first iron pitchfork, first iron plow, first wagon and first fanning mill for cleaning grain. He organized the first school, was one of the first Justices, was elected three times by the Legislature to serve as Associate Judge of Hocking Co. He was a farmer but also dealt extensively in cattle. He was a Whig in politics and a friend of Henry Clay.
